How scammers use AI to impersonate you (and how to stop it)
The cost of cloning a voice dropped from $1,000+ in 2023 to under $0.01 in 2026. Here's what changed, what scammers are doing with it, and the 4 defenses that still work.
If a "family emergency" call is in progress right now: hang up, call the person back on a number you already have, and require the family safe word before sending anything. Read the Panic Guide.
The 4 AI-enabled scam types
1. Voice cloning ("Mom, it's me, I lost my phone")
3–6 seconds of clean audio — pulled from your kid's TikTok, your boss's podcast — is enough to clone a voice with current models. The scammer then calls a parent or assistant claiming a car-accident emergency, demanding wired money or gift cards. Average loss: $11k per incident (FTC, 2025).
2. Live deepfake video calls (CFO fraud)
Real-time face-swap tools run on consumer GPUs. In February 2024 a Hong Kong finance worker wired $25M after a video call with what looked like the company CFO and several colleagues — every face was a deepfake. The defense: any abnormal financial request must be confirmed on a second channel.
3. AI-written romance / pig-butchering DMs
The old "broken English" tell is dead. GPT-class models write fluent, locally-idiomatic flirty messages at scale. The patterns to recognize are now structural, not linguistic — see the 2026 scam phrases guide.
4. AI-cloned social profiles ("verified safe" impersonators)
Scammers scrape a real profile, generate a near-identical bio with an LLM, swap one letter in the handle, and DM the original's followers. This is the explosive growth category in 2026. See the TikTok, X, Instagram, and YouTube impersonator guides.
The 4 defenses that still work
- Family safe word. Agree on a phrase. Any caller claiming to be a family member in trouble must say it. No AI clone can guess it. Free, perfect.
- Call back on a known number. If a "boss" or "family member" asks for money or a wire by phone or video, hang up and call them on a number you already have.
- Reduce your public audio footprint. Lock TikTok / Instagram to followers only if you're a parent. Voice samples are the raw material.
- Scan suspicious profiles before engaging. Run any new DM-er through the GACS social scanner — it cross-checks against verified handles and learned impersonator patterns.
