What to do if you were caught by this

Contact your bank or card issuer straight away and ask them to stop, recall or charge back the payment.
Keep every message, receipt, screenshot and address before you block anyone — this is the evidence any investigation needs.
Report it to your national fraud authority. In the United States that is the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov.
Ignore anyone who contacts you offering to recover the money for a fee. Recovery fraud is the standard follow-up to this pattern.
