A romance scam is a confidence trick where the perpetrator feigns a romantic relationship — usually entirely online — to extract money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or sensitive personal information from the victim. Most contemporary romance scams blend into 'pig butchering' (sha zhu pan) crypto-investment fraud.
Red flags to watch for
- Met on a dating app or social DM but refuses to video-call or always cancels last minute
- Profession that conveniently explains why they can't meet — offshore engineer, military deployed overseas, surgeon, oil-rig worker
- Within 2–4 weeks declares deep feelings, calls you 'soulmate', 'baby', or 'my love'
- Eventually introduces a 'guaranteed' investment platform, family emergency, customs fee, or medical bill
- Asks for crypto, gift cards, wire transfer, or remote-desktop access to 'help you set up' an investment account
- Profile photos reverse-image search to a different real person (often a model, soldier, or doctor)

What to do if you've been targeted

Stop contact immediately
Block the account on every platform. Do not 'explain why' — scammers use any reply to re-hook.

Screenshot every message, profile, payment receipt, and crypto transaction hash before blocking. Save to a folder labelled with the date.

File at IC3.gov (US), ActionFraud.police.uk (UK), CAFC (Canada), Scamwatch (AU), or your local cybercrime unit. Include all evidence.

Banks can initiate chargebacks within ~60 days for ACH/wire. Exchanges can flag receiving addresses if alerted quickly.

Can I get my money back from a romance scammer?
Recovery rates are low but not zero. Report the transaction to your bank within 24 hours (chargeback window), file with IC3.gov (US), Action Fraud (UK), or your national equivalent, and freeze any compromised accounts. For crypto, contact the receiving exchange immediately with the transaction hash. Avoid 'recovery agents' that DM you offering to retrieve funds — these are secondary scams.
Are the scammers usually individuals or organized groups?
Most are organized: Southeast Asian compounds (Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos) running hundreds of scripted operators, often human-trafficked workers forced to run the scam against Western targets. The person texting you is rarely the person profiting.
