WhatsApp scam alerts
WhatsApp scams cost UK consumers £64M+ in 2024 per Action Fraud, with 'Hi Mum/Hi Dad' impersonation as the breakout volume scam. Globally, WhatsApp is also the on-ramp for pig-butchering ('wrong number' opening), Telegram-job pipelines, and fake recruiter outreach.

What this is
WhatsApp scams cover any fraud whose initial vector is the WhatsApp messenger — family impersonation requesting an urgent transfer, fake recruiters, wrong-number opens that pivot to investment, and group adds to fake VIP investor rooms.
Red flags to watch for
- Message from a new number claiming to be your son/daughter who 'lost their phone' and needs money urgently
- Unsolicited 'recruiter' offering a remote role at a real company — verify on the company's official careers page
- 'Wrong number' message that escalates within days into a friendly relationship, then an investment tip
- Added to a 'VIP investment' group with hundreds of members posting screenshots of profits
- Verification code sent unexpectedly with someone asking you to share it — account-takeover attempt

What to do if you've been targeted
- 1
Verify via a known channel
If a 'family member' messages from a new number, call them on the number you already have. Voice clones are increasingly common — verify in person where possible.
- 2
Block and report the contact
Long-press the chat -> Report -> Block. WhatsApp uses spam-pattern detection that benefits from reports.
- 3
Notify your bank
If you transferred funds, call your bank's fraud line within minutes. UK/EU instant payments can sometimes be reversed.
- 4
Enable two-step verification
Settings -> Account -> Two-step verification. Add an email so you can recover if SIM-swapped.
- 5
Activate Shield
Save the actor's phone number and any wallets to your free GACS Shield.
FAQs
Someone is impersonating me on WhatsApp — what do I do?
Enable two-step verification (Settings -> Account -> Two-step verification). Report the impersonating account inside WhatsApp and email support@whatsapp.com with screenshots. Warn your contacts publicly.
Can I get my money back from a WhatsApp scam?
If you paid by UK Faster Payments, file with your bank and reference the CRM Code (2025 mandatory reimbursement scheme for APP fraud). For card payments, request chargeback. Crypto/cash-equivalent is typically unrecoverable.
How does WhatsApp 'view once' get exploited in sextortion?
Attackers prefer 'view once' to make victims feel safer about sharing intimate images. They screen-record from a second phone or camera before opening; the screenshot-detection notice does NOT fire for an external camera capturing the screen. Treat anything you send as fully recordable.
Why am I being added to WhatsApp 'VIP investment' groups?
Your number was almost certainly in a scraped breach corpus (the 2021 Facebook leak, 2024 Authy leak, telco data dumps). Scammers buy these lists and bulk-add to fake signal groups. Mitigate via Settings → Privacy → Groups → 'My contacts' so strangers can no longer add you directly.
How do I report a scam to GACS?
Submit the wallet address, website, phone number, or social handle at gacs.app. Each report is cross-checked against CryptoScamDB, URLhaus, and on-chain analysis before publication. Activate your free GACS Shield to monitor follow-on activity tied to the same actor.
Is the GACS Shield really free?
Yes. Activating your free Shield gives you unlimited scans, saved history, weekly alerts, and a watchlist — no card, no trial. There is no paid scanner tier.
