How an entry gets listed

- 3When three independent people report the same number, it is promoted to the public registry with its own page.
- 4The entry is re-checked over time, so numbers that stop being reported are shown as dormant rather than active.
- 5Anyone associated with a listing can appeal; a successful appeal removes the entry.

Questions people ask
How do I check who called me from an unknown number?
Paste the number into the lookup on this page. GACS matches it against every reported number in the public registry and shows how many people reported it and what the caller claimed to be. If nothing matches, the number simply has not been reported yet — scam operations rotate numbers constantly, so a clean result is not proof the call was genuine.
Should I call back a number I do not recognise?
No. Call back the organisation the caller claimed to represent using the number printed on your bank card, your bill or the official website — never the number that called you and never a number the caller reads out. A genuine bank will never ask you to move money to a 'safe account', read out a code, or install remote-access software.
Is it a scam if the number looks local?
A local-looking number proves nothing. Caller ID is trivially spoofed, so scam operations routinely display a number from your own area code, or even the real published number of your bank or a government agency. Judge the call by what is being asked of you, not by the number on the screen.
What should I do after a scam call?
Hang up, do not call back, and report the number to your national authority — the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov in the United States, Action Fraud in the UK, and the equivalent regulator elsewhere. Then report it here so the next person who searches it sees the warning. If you shared bank details or installed anything, call your bank straight away.
Can I cite the GACS scam phone number registry?
Yes, with attribution to GACS (Global Anti-Crime & Safety) and a link to the page used. Aggregate counts are published openly; nothing identifying a person who filed a report is ever published.
