A gift-card scam is any scheme in which the perpetrator persuades the victim to buy retail gift cards (iTunes, Steam, Google Play, Amazon, Target, Vanilla) and share the codes — typically over phone, SMS, or chat — under a fabricated emergency or obligation.
Red flags to watch for
- Caller demands payment in gift cards for taxes, utilities, bail, or 'security deposit'
- Romance interest claims their card is locked and asks you to buy gift cards 'just until payday'
- Boss / pastor / family member texts urgently asking you to buy cards and send codes
- Tech-support 'refund' asks you to buy cards 'to confirm your bank account'
- Buyer of a marketplace item insists on overpaying via gift card

What to do if you've been targeted

Stop the purchase or contact card issuer immediately
If you haven't read the code aloud, return the card to the store with the receipt. If redeemed, call the issuer's fraud line within hours.

Keep the physical card, the receipt, and screenshots of the conversation. You'll need these for the FTC report and any refund request.
