Short answer: Bitcoin is not a scam, and it is fully legal in the United Kingdom. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulates cryptoasset firms under the Money Laundering Regulations, and any platform marketing Bitcoin to UK consumers must be on the FCA's registered cryptoasset firms list. Bitcoin itself is just open-source software — what the FCA actually polices is the firms touching your money.
The longer answer: UK residents reported losing over £306 million to crypto investment fraud in the 2024–25 financial year to Action Fraud. Almost none of those losses came from holding Bitcoin. They came from unregistered "brokers," fake celebrity-endorsed platforms, and romance-investment cons — all paid in Bitcoin because it's hard to reverse.
The FCA test that tells you in 10 seconds
Before sending a penny to any platform calling itself a "Bitcoin investment" service:
- Open the FCA register and search the firm's exact name.
- Check the FCA's Warning List for the same name or domain — this is the live list of unauthorised firms targeting UK consumers.
- Paste the URL into the GACS Safe Scanner. It cross-references the FCA warnings, our fake brokers blacklist, and 228+ verified scam entities in 4 seconds.
If the firm isn't on the FCA register, it is operating illegally in the UK. Walk away.
UK-specific red flags
- The platform promises returns in GBP "guaranteed weekly" — UK-authorised firms cannot legally advertise guaranteed crypto returns.
- A "FCA refund agent" emails you about a previous loss. The FCA never contacts victims to arrange refunds. This is a recovery scam.
- An ad on Facebook or Instagram features Martin Lewis, Richard Branson, or the BBC endorsing a Bitcoin platform. Every one of those is a deepfake; Martin Lewis has publicly disowned them.
- You're pushed to deposit via a "tax clearance" wire to HMRC. HMRC never asks for crypto.
How to report in the UK
- Action Fraud — call 0300 123 2040 or report at actionfraud.police.uk. They route to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.
- FCA Consumer Helpline — 0800 111 6768 if the firm claims FCA authorisation it doesn't have.
- Your bank's fraud line — if you sent funds from a UK bank account in the last 24–48 hours, contact them immediately to attempt recall under the Contingent Reimbursement Model code.
- GACS — report the entity so future UK victims see a warning when they search.
The one-line summary
Bitcoin is a legal, FCA-aware asset in the UK. The "Bitcoin trading platform" cold-DMing you on WhatsApp almost certainly isn't on the FCA register. Check it on Safe Scanner before any transfer.
