Is Bitcoin a scam? The India 2026 answer + RBI guide

Bitcoin isn't a scam in India — but most IN 'Bitcoin' brokers are. The legal status, the platforms to avoid, and how to deposit safely.

2026-06-06 6 min read

Short answer: Bitcoin is not a scam, and it is legal to buy, hold, and sell in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Ministry of Finance have not banned crypto. Since the 2022 Union Budget, Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) are taxed at a flat 30% on gains under Section 115BBH and a 1% TDS on every transfer over ₹10,000 under Section 194S. Crypto exchanges operating in India must register with the FIU-IND (Financial Intelligence Unit) as Reporting Entities.

The harder reality: The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) logged over ₹2,000 crore in crypto-related scam losses in 2025, with Telegram "task scams" and fake "WazirX support" calls dominating reports. Bitcoin is not the scam — the people pretending to teach you Bitcoin trading on Telegram are.

The 30-second FIU-IND check

Before depositing INR into any "Bitcoin platform":

  1. Search the FIU-IND list of registered VDA Reporting Entities at fiuindia.gov.in. CoinDCX, WazirX, ZebPay, Mudrex, Giottus, Bitbns, KuCoin, and Binance are on the list. Most "offshore" platforms targeting Indians are not.
  2. Check whether the platform deducts 1% TDS automatically on every sell. If it doesn't, it isn't complying with Indian law and your gains are exposed.
  3. Verify the UPI handle they want you to pay. Real exchanges use a corporate VPA in the exchange's name — never a personal @oksbi or @paytm handle.
  4. Paste the URL into the GACS Safe Scanner — we cross-check our fake brokers list in 4 seconds.

India-specific red flags

  • A Telegram or WhatsApp group offers "guaranteed daily Bitcoin profits in INR." Real Indian exchanges cannot legally promise returns — this is the classic pig-butchering pattern.
  • A "task" platform pays you small amounts in USDT/BTC for reviewing hotels, then asks you to deposit ₹50,000+ to "unlock higher-tier tasks." 100% of these are scams; they're the dominant fraud category for Indians aged 22–34 in 2025.
  • Someone claiming to be from "WazirX recovery" or "CoinDCX support" calls about funds stuck in a "frozen wallet." Indian exchanges only contact users through in-app chat and verified email — never via phone or Telegram DM.
  • A "CBI" or "ED" officer claims you owe Bitcoin in penalties. Indian enforcement agencies never demand crypto.

How to report in India

  • National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal — cybercrime.gov.in (24×7) or call 1930. Routes to state cyber cells and freezes mule accounts.
  • Your bank — call the fraud helpline within 24 hours. Under RBI's "Zero Liability" framework, fast reporting protects you.
  • CERT-In — for phishing domains: incident@cert-in.org.in.
  • GACSadd the entity to our public blacklist so the next Indian searching its name sees a warning.

The one-line summary

Bitcoin is legal and taxed in India. The "guaranteed-return Bitcoin guru" who added you to a Telegram group almost certainly isn't an FIU-registered entity. Scan before you transfer a single rupee.

Frequently asked questions

Can crypto transactions be reversed?+

No. On-chain transactions are final. Recovery depends on the receiving exchange freezing funds before they are withdrawn or mixed — which is why reporting within 24 hours matters.

How do I check a crypto wallet for scam activity?+

Paste the address into the GACS Safe Scanner. It cross-references known scam wallets across BTC, ETH, BSC, and USDT-TRC20.
