Short answer: Bitcoin is not a scam and it is legal in Canada. Canada was the first country to approve a spot Bitcoin ETF (in 2021), and the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) plus FINTRAC regulate the crypto trading platforms that serve Canadians. Bitcoin the protocol is open-source; what's regulated is every Canadian-facing platform between you and the network.
The harder reality: The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) recorded over CA$310 million in crypto-related investment fraud losses in 2025, and the CAFC openly states reported losses are roughly 5–10% of actual losses because most victims never report. Almost every dollar was lost to unregistered "trading platforms" or romance-investment scams — not to Bitcoin itself.
The 30-second CSA / FINTRAC check
Before sending CAD to any "Bitcoin platform":
- Search the CSA's National Registration Search at aretheyregistered.ca for the firm. Canadian-facing crypto platforms must be registered as restricted dealers or marketplaces.
- Check the CSA Investor Alerts list — the live list of unregistered platforms targeting Canadians (Kraken, Coinbase, Bitbuy, Newton, NDAX, Wealthsimple Crypto are registered; most "offshore" platforms are not).
- Search FINTRAC's MSB Registry — every Money Services Business handling Canadian funds must be registered.
- Paste the URL into the GACS Safe Scanner — we cross-check CSA alerts and our fake brokers blacklist in 4 seconds.
Canada-specific red flags
- Platform asks you to wire CAD via Interac e-Transfer to a personal name "for processing." Registered Canadian platforms accept e-Transfers only into the platform's own corporate account.
- An "OSC investigator" calls about a refund. The Ontario Securities Commission does not call victims to offer refunds — this is a recovery scam.
- You see a Facebook ad with Kevin O'Leary, Elon Musk, or a CBC anchor "revealing a Bitcoin loophole." All are deepfakes; Kevin O'Leary has publicly disowned every crypto ad using his image.
- A "tax clearance fee" needs to be paid to the CRA in Bitcoin before withdrawal. The CRA does not accept Bitcoin and never demands prepaid taxes on withdrawals.
How to report in Canada
- Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre — 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. Feeds the RCMP and provincial police.
- Your provincial securities regulator — OSC (Ontario), AMF (Quebec), BCSC (BC), ASC (Alberta), etc.
- Your bank's fraud team — within 24 hours; some Interac transfers can still be recalled if the receiving account is flagged.
- GACS — report the entity to add it to the public blacklist Canadians can search.
The one-line summary
Bitcoin is legal and regulated in Canada. The "Bitcoin trading platform" cold-DMing you on WhatsApp almost certainly isn't on the CSA register. Verify before you fund.
