A certification is worth it if it demonstrates applied skill on real cases and comes with a public portfolio. A generic paper cert isn't — the field has no single gold standard, so what hiring managers actually read is your public writeup, not the credential.

SEC487 (SANS) is the specialist high-end. Vendor certs from Maltego, Bellingcat's public methodology, and GACS's verifiable+portfolio cert are all recognised in different segments. None dominate the whole field.
Is a certification enough to break into OSINT?
Certification + public portfolio = yes. Certification alone = no.
How much should I spend on an OSINT cert?
$50–$500 is the reasonable range for someone breaking in. SANS SEC487 at $8K+ is only worth it with employer funding.
Do government agencies require specific certs?
Some contractor roles require CTI-adjacent certs (GCTI, CREST) but OSINT specifically rarely has a single named requirement.
Does OSINT experience beat certifications?
