First 10 minutes if something happens

1. 1.Get to a safe, public spot (café, hotel lobby, shop) and call All emergencies on 112 if anyone is hurt or in immediate danger.

Top 5 scams to watch for

1. 1. Tram 28 pickpockets
   The famous tourist tram is Europe's densest pickpocketing route.
   Avoid: Buy a Viva Viagem card and validate — pickpockets target people fumbling with cash.
   If it happens: Shout to draw attention; the group exits fast.
2. 2. Fake drug sellers in Baixa / Rossio
   'Hashish? Cocaine?' whispered on Rua Augusta — the product is soap or oregano.
   Avoid: Ignore all such offers, walk on without engaging.
   If it happens: Walk away — there is no recovery for cash lost.
3. 3. Restaurant 'couvert' bill padding
   Bread, olives, and cheese arrive 'complimentary' — then appear on the bill at €5–€15 each.
   Avoid: Politely return anything you didn't order — 'não obrigado.'
   If it happens: Refuse to pay for items you didn't touch — insist they're removed from the bill.
4. 4. Taxi long-route from LIS airport
   Driver takes the scenic 25 km route for a 7 km trip; €40 for a €12 fare.
   Avoid: Insist on 'taximetro' (the meter) before departing.
   If it happens: Photograph the taxi number and driver ID.
5. 5. Illegal tuk-tuk / hop-on tour overcharge
   Verbal quote of €10 becomes €80 at the end of a 'quick tour.'
