Gold shop switch in Deira Gold Souk
Weighed at 22ct at the counter; the piece you take home tests at 14ct.
How it works
In Deira Gold Souk, some shops perform the weighing / testing with a real 22ct sample, then wrap and swap for a lower-karat piece before handing over. Others use inflated 'making charge' surcharges (150 AED becomes 800 AED).
How to avoid it
- Only buy from members of the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (dubaijewellerygroup.com) — regulated, receipts standardised.
- Insist on assay hallmark visible on the piece before purchase.
- Take the piece to a Dubai Municipality certified assay office (Consumer Protection) for verification.
If it happens: do this now
- Return within 15 days for a refund if piece is not as described (UAE Consumer Protection Law).
- File complaint at Dubai Consumer Rights hotline 600 545 555 or app 'Dubai Consumer.'
- Dispute card charge within 60 days.
Timeshare 'holiday club' pitch at Dubai Mall / airport
'Scratch-and-win' gives you a 'free luxury holiday' — actually a 4-hour timeshare pitch.
How it works
Kiosks at Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and DXB arrivals offer 'scratch and win' cards. Every card 'wins' a holiday claimable via a '90-min presentation' — actually 4–6 hours of high-pressure timeshare sale, often for $10k–$50k membership.
How to avoid it
- Skip all scratchcards, 'lucky draw' desks, and 'holiday winner' pitches.
- Never share credit card or ID at a kiosk.
- Real UAE tourism info is at DTCM offices, not kiosks.
If it happens: do this now
- UAE Consumer Protection allows 15-day cooling-off on signed timeshare contracts — file rescission in writing immediately.
- Report to Dubai Consumer Rights 600 545 555.
- Dispute card charges within 60 days.
DXB airport taxi long-hauling
Driver takes E11 → E44 detour, doubling the fare.
How it works
Legal RTA taxi rate from DXB to Downtown / Marina is 60–100 AED. Some drivers detour via the Sheikh Zayed Road → Al Khail extension, doubling the fare. RTA (Roads & Transport Authority) can fine drivers.
How to avoid it
- Take official RTA taxi from the marked rank — every driver's ID is on dashboard.
- Use Careem or Uber — fixed price shown before booking.
- Metro Red Line to Downtown / Marina is 8 AED.
If it happens: do this now
- Pay only reasonable fare based on Google Maps route; photograph plate & driver ID.
- Report to RTA at 8009090 or app 'RTA Dubai' — they refund confirmed long-hauls.
- Dispute card charge within 60 days.
ATM skimming in tourist zones
Skimmers on non-bank ATMs at hotel lobbies and metro stations.
How it works
Standalone (non-bank-branded) ATMs at some hotel lobbies, metro stations, and small shopping strips are targeted with card-slot overlays and PIN cameras. Charges appear from Sharjah or Ajman 24–72h later.
How to avoid it
- Use ATMs inside major UAE bank branches only: Emirates NBD, ADCB, HSBC, First Abu Dhabi Bank.
- Cover keypad; wiggle card slot before inserting.
- Set daily withdrawal limit low.
If it happens: do this now
- Freeze card immediately via banking app.
- Report to UAE Central Bank Fraud Reporting portal (centralbank.ae).
- File police report at Dubai Police (999 or app 'Dubai Police') for insurance / dispute.
Fake real estate viewing tour bait
'Investment tour' with free lunch becomes 5-hour pressure sale for a $500k off-plan flip.
How it works
Broker cold-calls or WhatsApp messages promise 'free luxury tour with lunch' to showcase Dubai Marina / Palm properties. Reality: 4–6h hard sell for off-plan units with commission structures that hurt buyers.
How to avoid it
- Never share property preferences via WhatsApp with a broker you don't know.
- Real property purchase in Dubai requires RERA-registered broker (check at rera.dld.gov.ae).
- 'Off-plan' investments carry major delivery / market risk not disclosed at pitches.
If it happens: do this now
- UAE law gives cooling-off on some property purchases — check with RERA.
- File complaint at RERA / Dubai Land Department if misled.
- Dispute deposit / commission charges within 60 days.
