Barcelona tourist scams: what to watch for, how to react
Barcelona is a top-3 pickpocketing city in Europe. Violent crime is rare, but La Rambla, the Metro L3, Sagrada Família, and Barceloneta beach are extremely high-risk for theft.

Top 5 scams in Barcelona
La Rambla pickpocket teams
Coordinated 3–6 person teams work every 200m of La Rambla around the clock.
How it works
One person 'accidentally' bumps you or spills something on you. While you clean up or apologise, others open your bag or pocket. Common variants: fake football fans hugging you, a map shoved in your face, a 'lost tourist' asking directions.
How to avoid it
- Use a money belt or hidden pouch. Zero cash or cards in outer pockets.
- Wear backpacks on the front in crowds.
- Walk in the middle of La Rambla, not near the edges where teams cluster.
If it happens: do this now
- Shout 'Ladrón!' loudly — locals often step in.
- File denuncia online at https://denuncias.policia.es within 72 hours (needed for insurance).
- Block cards via app immediately; Barcelona thieves test cards within 3 minutes.
Metro L3 door thieves
Thieves grab phones and bags as the doors close and jump out — you cannot follow.
How it works
As the beeper sounds and doors close, a thief snatches your phone or open bag and steps off the train. Common at Liceu, Passeig de Gràcia, Sagrada Família, and Diagonal.
How to avoid it
- Stand away from doors when the train stops.
- Phone in front pocket or zipped bag — never in hand near a door.
- Wear your backpack on the front on Metro L3.
If it happens: do this now
- Note the station and time — L3 has CCTV that helps recovery.
- Report to TMB staff at the next station; they can radio ahead.
- File denuncia at any Mossos d'Esquadra station — required for phone insurance.
'Football shirt' bear hug
Men in Barça or foreign football shirts hug you in celebration — one hugs, one steals.
How it works
Fake fans spot you near Camp Nou, Plaça Catalunya, or after matches and rush over shouting 'Barça! Barça!' They wrap you in a hug while a partner lifts your wallet or phone. Common on match nights.
How to avoid it
- Do not accept hugs from strangers, even in celebration.
- Keep both hands on your bag if approached.
- Wear cross-body bags with zippers on the front.
If it happens: do this now
- Check pockets immediately. Shout for police.
- File denuncia — CCTV often catches these teams.
Beach bag snatch (Barceloneta)
Thieves 'swim' up or crawl low on the sand and take unattended bags in seconds.
How it works
While you swim, a thief walks slowly along the beach, drops a towel over your bag, and picks it up under the towel. Also: 'friendly' strangers strike up conversation while an accomplice takes your bag.
How to avoid it
- Never leave anything on the sand while swimming — take turns.
- Use a waterproof pouch on a lanyard around your neck.
- Beach lockers cost €2–€5 at chiringuitos.
If it happens: do this now
- Ask the nearest chiringuito to review CCTV.
- File denuncia at Mossos d'Esquadra beach station on Passeig Marítim.
Restaurant menu / bill fraud on La Rambla
Menus outside show €12 paella; the bill arrives at €38 with mystery charges.
How it works
Restaurants directly on La Rambla and around Sagrada Família use two-price menus, charge €8 'cover,' and mark up drinks. Often paella is frozen and reheated.
How to avoid it
- Eat 2 streets off La Rambla — El Born, Poble Sec, Gràcia have real local prices.
- Ask for the bill (la cuenta) before ordering another round.
- Check prices per item on the menu before sitting — including bread and cover.
If it happens: do this now
- Refuse undisclosed charges; ask for the hoja de reclamaciones (complaint book) — legally required to be provided.
- Report to the Guardia Urbana (092) if they refuse.
